Barney Butter uses only the very top quality California almonds, which we then blanch (take the skin off) before grinding. This results in the ultra smooth taste and texture of our nut butters that are completely unique to Barney Butter.
In addition to using only BEST California almonds, we have also transitioned to all organic, fair-trade ingredients, where possible. Ingredients matter.
Effective September 1, 2007, almonds produced in California and sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico are required to be pasteurized prior to sale. This effectively covers all almonds grown in the U.S., because the entire U.S. almond crop is grown in California.
All of our almonds are steam pasteurized and PPO free.
The pasteurization method used for our almonds employs moisture from steam to kill surface bacteria that might reside on the almond skin. This extremely rapid process requires less than one minute and does not heat the internal almond meat. The Almond Board of California has conducted extensive testing on the impact that this quick treatment has on the nutritional value of the almonds and has determined that the raw almond characteristics remain unchanged. This finding has also been confirmed by independent laboratory analyses of pasteurized and unpasteurized almonds, which showed no degradation of the nutritional value of almonds after treatment.
It should be noted that raw is not a regulated term and we do not wish to mislead consumers who are following a strict raw-eating plan. At Barney Butter we make our raw almond butter using the almond industry’s definition for raw, which calls for the use of almonds that are not roasted prior to grinding.
Heat is generated by friction during the grinding process of our almond butters; this is the only head our raw almonds are exposed to other than the steam pasteurization.
We make all of our own almond butters in small batches in our facility in Fresno, CA. Our facility is certified peanut free and our products remain free from cross contamination with other tree nuts (coconut being the exception), dairy, eggs, grain, and seed products. Barney Butter has not been impacted by the recalls affecting many nut butters using co-packers.
All Barney Butter almond butters are certified peanut free and Kosher. All Barney Butter products with the exception of Honey + Flax are verified Non-GMO and certified vegan. Honey + Flax cannot be verified Non-GMO because honey can’t be verified and cannot be certified vegan because honey is not vegan.
No, the sea salt used in Barney Butter is purified, but not iodized.
All of our products are dairy free. Besides Honey + Flax, which contains honey, all of our other flavors are vegan.
Yes, they are certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union and bear the OU symbol.
Yes, all Barney Butter almond butters are free of gluten-containing ingredients and are produced in a facility that does not process gluten-containing ingredients. All of our products are certified Gluten Free by the Gluten Intolerance Group.
The minimal use of natural sea salt enhances the flavor of the almond. For those who choose to not use salt, Barney Butter offers both Bare Smooth and Crunchy with no added salt as well as Raw + Chia.
A small amount of organic, fair trade cane sugar enhances the rich roasted flavor of the nuts, providing a taste experience many consumers prefer. We do offer three no sugar added flavors: Barney Bare Smooth, Barney Bare Crunchy, and Raw + Chia.
Barney almonds and almond butters are certified Non-GMO by the leading certifier, the Non-GMO Project. You will see the “Non-GMO Verified” seal on all of our packaging. The one exception is our Honey + Flax flavor because technically honey can’t be verified, due to the nature of a bee and the pollination process.

Trans fatty acids, or trans fats, are chiefly liquid oils that have been converted to solid oils though hydrogenation, a high heat chemical process. Trans fats are present in hardened vegetable oils and many margarines, commercial baked foods and fried foods.
Medical health experts recommend avoiding trans fats, which have an adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels. Eating trans fats raises bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lowers good (HDL) cholesterol levels. The risk of developing heart disease and stroke also increases.
Barney Butter products contain no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and are 100% trans fat free.
Some fat in your diet is a good thing. Fats are required for a lot of the body’s basic processes. Children and pregnant women especially require sufficient fat for healthy development of mind and body. Other benefits of fats:
All oils and fats contain some amount of saturated fat, even the healthy ones, but in varying degrees depending on the type of oils and fats. The oil content of nuts is primarily heart healthy monounsaturated fat, along with a smaller percentage of saturates and polyunsaturated.
The American Heart Association recommends aiming for a dietary pattern that achieves 5% to 6% of calories from saturated fat. That means, for example, if you need about 2,000 calories a day, no more than 120 of them should come from saturated fats. That’s about 13 grams of saturated fats a day.
It depends on how you define raw. The term raw is not regulated and we do not wish to mislead any consumer following a strict raw eating plan.
If you follow a strict raw diet where foods cannot be heated above a certain temperature, we recommend at home grinding and temperature monitoring throughout the grinding process.
The palm oil used in our almond butters is not hydrogenated, contains zero trans fats and is lower in saturated fat than butter. It’s a vegetable oil and is cholesterol free. The palm oil we use is extracted from the palm fruit, using mechanical (not chemical) means. Trans fats have come under scrutiny from the FDA as a link to major diseases including heart disease and cancer.
Palm fruit oil is often confused with palm kernel oil. Palm kernel oil is derived from palm kernels and contains 82% saturated fat. Palm fruit oil comes from the fruit of the palm and has a nutritionally balanced profile of approximately 50% saturated and 50% unsaturated fat.
Don’t worry, it’s not mold!
The white particles you are seeing occur because of a phenomenon called cocoa bloom. When cocoa reaches a temperate of 75° F or above, the cocoa changes from solid to liquid and will rise to the surface of the nut butter. After this bloom, the cocoa butter reaches the top of the jar; as they’re exposed to cooler air temperature, crystals begin to form. These crystals are white and can be smaller or larger depending on the temperature the product was exposed to.
Please note that while it can be mistaken for mold, we assure you that it is not! Consuming nut butter when these crystals have formed will not harm you and should not change the taste of our products!
Although we do our best to keep our products at a cool temperature, once it leaves our manufacturing facility, it is hard to have complete control over the handling of the product.
We guarantee the quality of our products up to the code date, assuming they have been stored correctly. If the product has already been opened, refrigeration will often keep the product usable for a longer period of time. If the product has not been opened but has been stored in a cool, dark place, then it may still be usable. The best way to tell is to open it up and carefully evaluate its smell for any rancidity. If in doubt, dispose of the product.
U.S. date codes are usually listed as month, day, year, (MM/DD/YYYY). For example, 01/01/2015 is January 1, 2015. Our “Best By” dates are listed as one year from the date of manufacture.
While not required, refrigeration after opening does prolong the freshness of Barney Butter products.

Don’t worry, air bubbles can and do occur from time to time during sealing during production and space at the top of the jar of Barney Butter you purchased should be expected. The jars are actually 2 oz. larger than the amount of product they are filled with. Jars are filled by weight using an automated process with 10 oz. of almond butter filled into 12 oz. jars and 16 oz. of almond butter filled into 18 oz. jars. Usually jars are filled with a little extra almond butter as the extra space in the larger jars allows, just for good measure.

Oil separation is totally natural. All nuts have oil in them, and while we do process our almond butters in a way that minimizes to oil separation (almost to a point of non-existence) certain environmental and shipping conditions can cause oil separation. Believe it or not, driving our product to the East coast over the Rocky Mountains can cause separation because of the altitude. That delivery guy that throws your packages, yep, also causes oil separation. It’s a tricky thing.
The national brand peanut butters don’t separate because they use hydrogenated oil to stop separation and all hydrogenated oil contains trans-fats. Trans-fats = bad. Barney Butter almond butters have no trans fats, whatsoever, so enjoy!
All of our almond butters have a shelf life of one year sealed on the shelf from the date of manufacture. Once opened, we recommend eating within 3 months if stored at room temperature on the shelf or within 6 months if kept in the fridge.
This is a great question. Totally up to you and your preferences. Technically, Barney Butter almond butters, like other nut butters, do not need to be refrigerated. One reason that refrigeration is often recommended is to prevent oil separation. We have also found that refrigeration after opening does prolong the freshness of Barney Butter. We have many customers who prefer our almond butters refrigerated, especially after they have been sent in the mail. If you live in a warm or hot climate, our almond butters could arrive thinner than you would like. Putting them in the fridge and giving them a good stir produces a thicker texture and stronger flavor. Do what feels right for you and your almond butter spreading needs.
You are safe with us!! Barney Butter almond butters do not contain peanuts and are made in our own facility that is certified peanut-free. We perform an exhaustive clean-out between production runs of each of our almond butter flavors because we do also process coconut, chia, and flax, which are ingredients in some of our almond butters. Our facility is certified peanut-free and gluten free. In addition we do not process any other tree nuts in our facility including walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pistachios, etc., nor do we process any dairy, eggs, grain, soy, or fish products of any kind.
